New York City can never have too many charts and maps illustrating median rents in different neighborhoods. The folks at listings website Zumper have followed up on their May pricing map with two for July, shown above, illustrating median rents for one- and two-bedrooms in Manhattan, a few neighborhoods of Brooklyn, and Astoria. Once again, Tribeca retained its "most expensive" crown with a median price of $4,200/month for a 1BR and $7,695/month for a 2BR.

The next most expensive neighborhoods were—completely non-shockingly—Soho, with a median rent of $3,550/month for 1BRs, and Greenwich Village, at $3,500/month. The best deals were to be found on the East Side, with the Lower East Side median-ing $2,395/month and the Upper East Side $2,495/month.

As of 2009, the median home size for the typical urban household in the Northeast was 1,500 square feet, according to the National Association of Home Builders. And in New York City even that much space can be hard to come by. Take the $345,000 apartment for sale at 344 West 12th Street. The West Village studio apartment is barely200 square feet in size.

You might expect to find a cramped, cluttered dorm room of a home encompassing such humble dimensions, and if we were talking about my former digs (I actually inhabited a 225-sq. ft. studio for two years), you would be correct. But the difference between this tiny unit and, say, my former 1970s-era shoebox unit, is that this one is designed right.

Celebrity Real Estate year end wrap up

December 28, 2011 - As the year comes to an end, many reflect back on both the good and bad celebrity news stories. Curbed.com recently released its list of the best celebrity real estate news in New York during 2011.

Curbed listed celebrity chef Emeril's six-story townhouse as one of the best listed homes during the year. The home hit the market for a cool $15 million and photos of the home showcase his love of chandeliers. Soul singer John Legend also made the cut for listing his newly-renovated Scarano-on-the-Bowery home for $2.95 million.

The source reports that actress Julianne Moore's West Village townhouse has been on the market since 2009, but earned a spot on Curbed's favorite list for upping the price from $11.995 million to $12.5 million in true Hollywood fashion.

MANHATTAN — Carrie Bradshaw wannabes had better start saving their Manolo money.

One of two Perry Street townhouses that served as the backdrop for Sarah Jessica Parker's "Sex and the City" character is on the market for $8.5 million, according to The Corcoran Group's website.

The 4,100-square-foot townhouse at 64 Perry St. boasts four floors, 10 rooms and six fireplaces, according to Corcoran. It was built in 1866 and has only been owned by two families.
