Sandy's Aftermath

First and foremost, my heart goes out to all the people of New York City, New Jersey and the rest of the Eastern seaboard affected by Sandy.
I was fortunate to get through it unscathed. I've looked at my block and don't see any downed trees or damage. A tree is down in my neighbors back yard and is leaning on the cable TV wires. I hope I don't loose my Internet, although I don't think I will get much work done anyway! Despite that yesterday evening, during the height of the storm, I received an email from someone inquiring about an appointment! Very insensitive in my opinion; however this person needs to move immediately! *Blank stare at my computer screen*
There is no public transportation at all. Half of the City is without power. Schools are closed. Airports are closed. The New York Stock Exchange is closed and most of lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn, including Red Hook, Gowanus, and Dumbo were submerged in water.

For apartment landlords, 2011 was grand indeed

The Manhattan residential rental market ended 2011 with a bang.

Rents in the fourth quarter were up solidly from year-earlier levels, according to market reports released Thursday. The median Manhattan monthly rent of $3,145 for all sizes of apartments was the highest median since the fourth quarter of 2006, when median rents reached $3,265, according to the quarterly report by Prudential Douglas Elliman and Miller Samuel Inc. Meanwhile, median net effective rent jumped 9.5% to $3,121 from the fourth quarter of 2010, as landlords dialed back on concessions like a month of free rent.
Separately, brokerage Citi Habitats reported that the average Manhattan rent rose 6.2% to $3,322 a month last year.

Informed by his training as a furniture sales rep and his graduate fashion-design degree from Parsons, 35-year-old Bradford Shellhammer has developed a graphic, modern aesthetic that emphasizes vibrant hues and texture. “I love color,” he says. “I think when you have every shade, it works. You don’t have to think about themes.” His Technicolor approach is evident in every aspect of his 900-square-foot apartment, which he’s rented with his boyfriend, Georgi Balinov, for the past year and a half. Though he spends much of his time at work—Shellhammer cofounded design-driven flash-sale site Fab.com this June—he still managed to infuse his home with his energetic disposition. One piece that epitomizes his color-centric philosophy is the living room’s felted wool rug, a piece created by Barcelona designer Nani Marquina (nanimarquina.com). “When you have a lot of color and texture, it hides dirt,” he reveals. “Also, I like to entertain, but we don’t have a lot of square footage, so I wanted to choose a rug that would invite people to sit down on it.”

NYU Expansion plans delayed until 2012

It looks like New York University won't be laying the groundwork for formal city approval of its ambitious 20-year expansion plan until the New Year.
To proceed with its plan to add 3 million square feet to its campus in Greenwich Village and areas around Washington Square Park, the university needs city zoning approvals. NYU had originally hoped to begin the lengthy public-approval process known as Uniform Land Use Review Procedure, which takes up to seven months, before the end of the year. But at the request of Community Board 2, NYU sent the board a letter on Nov. 3 indicating that it will postpone its plans.
“We were ready [to begin] at the end of November, early December, but received a request from the community board leadership and agreed to hold our submission until after the holidays, in January,” said Alicia Hurley, vice president of government affairs and community engagement at NYU.
The university's 2031 expansion plans have been opposed by preservationists and some local community groups, who believe that NYU is overbuilding in the neighborhood. In an effort to appease some opponents, in September NYU announced that it tweaked its plans and ensured that two city-owned plots along LaGuardia Place and Mercer Street, on the east and west sides of Washington Square Village, will remain parkland. It also said no portion of its two proposed academic buildings will rest on the parkland.

This video really makes you re-think square footage. It takes the concept of "convertible" apartments to a whole new level. This would be very interesting in New York, although I think it'd still be a hard sell for most New Yorker's, who remain fixated on square feet. The closet thing I've seen to this is those pod concept hotel rooms in mid-town. I've seen quite a few apartments that have been customized with of course the murphy bed popping out of a wall and perhaps a hidden table or desk, or some other psuedo "Jetsons" concepts. The designer featured in this video is miles ahead of any space saving concepts I've ever seen in NY or even the tiny model apartments featured in IKEA. Overall, it's interesting and very cool but I think I'd grow weary of rolling all those walls around. However, they didn't show the most important feature following square feet - Closets!
