John Blesso feels as though he has made plenty of compromises to try to sell his Morningside Heights apartment. Before every open house over the past five months, he has hidden away his toaster, cocktail shaker, vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, remote controls, shaving cream and loofah, and even taken his towel off the towel rack.

Moving Walls Transform Apartment: Four Minutes of WOW! (VIDEO) : TreeHugger
Moving Walls Transform Apartment: Four Minutes of WOW! (VIDEO) : TreeHugger
This video really makes you re-think square footage. It takes the concept of "convertible" apartments to a whole new level. This would be very interesting in New York, although I think it'd still be a hard sell for most New Yorker's, who remain fixated on square feet. The closet thing I've seen to this is those pod concept hotel rooms in mid-town. I've seen quite a few apartments that have been customized with of course the murphy bed popping out of a wall and perhaps a hidden table or desk, or some other psuedo "Jetsons" concepts. The designer featured in this video is miles ahead of any space saving concepts I've ever seen in NY or even the tiny model apartments featured in IKEA. Overall, it's interesting and very cool but I think I'd grow weary of rolling all those walls around. However, they didn't show the most important feature following square feet - Closets!

New York Doorman Strike May Make Trash Men of Luxury Residents - BusinessWeek
New York Doorman Strike May Make Trash Men of Luxury Residents - BusinessWeek
New York City is approximately 13 hrs away from a possible doorman strike if the union cannot reach an agreement with the city's apartment building owners. Porters, supers, elevator operators, and handymen are also prepared to strike as well. Managing agents, co-op boards and the like are scrambling to put together a contingency plan in the event of a walk-out.
These people are hardworking and the silent keepers of the gate. As a broker, I can attest that if you get on the building staff's wrong side, they can keep you out of that gate. I've always advised new agents, that a little bit of courtesy and respect goes a long way when interacting with building staff. I've developed relationships over the years with many buildings.
I know how hard these people work, including my own building staff to keep things running smoothly. Hopefully a fair agreement can be reached.

Five Design Firms Transform Offices Into Homes - Vu. -- New York Magazine
Once upon a time in Soho, when the city had bottomed out and its factories had largely abandoned their cast-iron buildings, the loft was born. It’s a story we all know well: First came the artists, who colonized the empty spaces and put up with the freezing winters. They were joined by the gays and like-minded urban adventurers, who made loft living synonymous with downtown bohemian culture … and then pseudo-bohemian culture, as well as gay and gayish yuppie culture, and finally, luxury urban living. The idea of the loft spread far beyond Soho, so that by the end of the most recent building boom you could purchase “New York–Style Loft” apartments in downtown Houston or the wealthy neighborhoods of Bogotá. The loft had become one of our most clever inventions and cultural exports.
